Woven collection · handwoven rattan tote

The River Pattern

Handwoven rattan tote with angular banded motifs.

Storytelling

Across this larger tote, angular dark motifs repeat in horizontal bands against the natural rattan. Its generous proportions make it a useful carrying piece; the contrast and slight irregularities of the weave give it a character that mass-produced fabric cannot replicate.

In Kalimantan, woven carrying and storage objects have historically taken many specialised forms. Threads of Life records Dayak baskets used for gathering plants, carrying goods and storing seeds, alongside contemporary work that adapts weaving traditions for new uses. This tote is best understood as a contemporary bag in that wider craft context, not as a historical basket or a ceremonial object.
