Carved objects · figure from a Dayak longhouse

The Lamin Assembly

Set of three Dayak architectural figures, reportedly originating from a lamin fence, East Kalimantan. Weathered carved wood with surviving pigment traces. Contemporary powder-coated iron mounts.

Storytelling

The Lamin Assembly brings together three approximately 50-centimetre anthropomorphic wooden figures, each carved with its own distinctive expression and bearing the wear, pigment traces and irregularities accumulated over time.

The name refers to the lamin, the traditional Dayak communal longhouse of East Kalimantan: a large elevated structure built to accommodate numerous families under one roof. According to their reported provenance, figures of this type formed part of the wooden fencing or railing around a lamin. Their elongated architectural form reflects that original placement, while displaying the long tradition of anthropomorphic carving found across Borneo.

Now removed from their architectural context, the three figures are preserved as a single ensemble and presented individually on custom powder-coated iron bases.
